Known as Salem Village in the 17th century, there are still over a dozen houses in Danvers dating from that era, many associated with the witchcraft tragedy of Becoming independent from Salem in , Danvers witnessed the development of various neighborhood villages, each having its era of prominence, and possessing a unique character. At the time of the Revolution, Danversport was a shipping and shipbuilding center where tidal mills prospered. Its local bricks became nationally famous, while the later leather tanning industry brought a diverse and colorful mixture of new immigrant labor to the area. Tapleyville emerged in the s as a center for the production of woven carpets where English and Scottish weavers settled and made their homes. Danvers Plains took advantage of important crossroads and the introduction of the railroad in the s to become the prominent commercial center. Putnamville and Danvers Highlands were noted for their important and early shoe manufacturing industry, while farms throughout Danvers became known far and wide for the Danvers half-long carrot, and the Danvers onion, still popular today. Though a number of Danvers’ structures have been lost to fire and “progress,” much of the town’s period architecture still survives, and its written records have been preserved, making Danvers an important and accessible area for period study. I was particularly excited to visit Salem because it was not only an important site in the history of colonial New England, but it was a part of the survey I did of settlements for my MA research so getting to see it in person was a real treat! I decided to use the opportunity as a case study to investigate a particularly popular gravestone design. The site is the oldest organized European burial ground in Salem, and was established in by the Puritan peoples who founded the modern settlement.
It was never associated with a meeting house or church, which is typical of an early C17th Puritan settlement. Here I am with the sign marking the first meeting house location in Salem, erected Note the lack of graves nearby! Photo by Ian Petty,

This article, in spite of being almost a year old, is one of our top viewed and commented upon stories month after month consistently in As hard as it is to take in, this fact means a great deal. Exposing atrocities vividly online is one of the most powerful, underutilized options we Human Rights journalists have at our disposal. We make sure that the memories of Sri Lanka’s war crimes follows their officials around like a bad smell. Here is the article from March I have written several articles examining the terrible crimes against innocent women and girls that occurred during the Sri Lanka civil war and the ensuing Genocide that enveloped the Tamil population in the island country’s northern region.
The conflict wiped out most of the resistance force, the LTTE Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam – aka ‘Tamil Tigers’ , and tens of thousands of innocent defenseless civilians who were directly targeted. Along with the carnage came a barrage of sex crimes against Tamil women and girls that defy real description. Humiliation, torture, children murdered in obscene ways, military leaders with white flags gunned down while they surrendered, white van disappearances that strike horror into the heart Tamil people.
The images attest to human cruelty that is simply beyond the imagination of western people whose governments when united, most of all, have a chance of forcing change on nations like this that by policy, practice deadly, mass murder against their own citizens. Sri Lanka’s actions against its own people stand as a textbook example of state terrorism. There was nothing rational or reasonable or justifiable about directing people into safe zones and then bombing them, or killing old men and old women, chasing families down, one atrocity after another.
